Abstract
This research is aim to identify the techniques applied in simultaneous interpreting and the factors that influenced the technique applied at the Regional Meeting of La Via Campesina Conference. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The methodology of this research is field research through non-participative observation by observing the process of simultaneous interpreting involving the speaker, audience and interpreter and recorded them by audio digital recorder followed by a note taking technique. The recording data are transcribed into written texts. The data are consisted of linguistic form. The research showed that there are five majority of techniques used during the simultaneous interpreting process, namely: (1) Summarizing technique is used as much as 26,2%, and the factors are, speed and time lag, directionality, and memory capacity. (2) Reformulation technique is used as much as 25,1% and the factors are, processing director, accent or dialect and fast delivery. (3) The omission technique is used as much as 12,6% and the factors are, memories and attention, interpreter visibility, noises and technical difficulties. (4) The simplification technique is used as much as 7,7%, and the factors are, numbers, speed and density of speech, high profile or attitude towards the attendees. (5) The transcoding technique is used as much as 10%, and the factors are, advance knowledge or prior information, syntax, and bilingualism. (6) The rest of the techniques are used as much as 18,4%, namely; salami technique, code-switching, incomplete sentences strategy, anticipation, error correction, metaphors & saying technique, generalization. The findings further indicate that due to different language system the simultaneous interpreter need to be more aware of the interpreting techniques. In order to be able to translate what was said within the time allowed by the speaker's pace without changing the natural flow of the speaker’s speech. Keywords: interpreting, simultaneous, technique and conference.
