Abstract
Teaching English at elementary schools aims to develop the competence of elementary schools graduates that should be appropriate in order to prepare them to learn English at the higher level. This study is to develop a model of integrated subconscious and conscious learning (ISCL) in teaching English to elementary schools students. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the existing model of teaching English at elementary schools in Kudus, (2) to determine the needs of elementary school students in Kudus in developing a model of English teaching, (3) to design a model of teaching English to elementary school students oriented to integrated subconscious and conscious learning, and (4) to reveal the effectiveness of the developed model. To develop the model of ISCL, a research and development (R&D) study was conducted with the design of analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) (Dick, Carey, and Carey:1996). In the step of analysis, the researcher carried out an exploratory study to know the existing model of teaching English at 37 elementary schools in Kudus, and then the prototype of the model was deigned based on the needs analysis conducted in exploratory study. In the step of development, the prototype was validated through the expert judgements and stakeholders in a focus group discussion. To implement the model of ISCL, the researcher conducted a classroom action reserach in SD 4 Mejobo Kudus, while to evaluate the teaching model, an experiment was carried out in SD 2 Mejobo Kudus and SD 2 Panjang Kudus. The result of this study is a model of ISCL that is effective in teaching English to elementary school students in Kudus. The teaching model covers the syntax of the teaching, support system, principle of reaction, social system, instructional and nurturant effects, and the components of the teaching including syllabus, lesson plan, learning materials, and evaluation. Finally, this study produces a model of ISCL in teaching English to elementary school students which is expected to be one of the alternative models of teaching English to elementary school students generally with some elaboration and adaptation.
