Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to find appropriate action songs using direct interaction approach in improving basic vocabulary for young learners, (2) to develop action songs using direct interaction approach in improving basic vocabulary for young learners, and (3) to find out the effectiveness of action songs using direct interaction approach in improving basic vocabulary for young learners. This research and development referred to Borg and Gall’s model. The development design was summed up into three general sequences: (1) preliminary study, (2) development process, and (3) product trial. The trial involved 77 children of fifth grade students from two different elementary schools, an Islamic elementary school, and a conventional elementary school. The product trial used quasi experimental research to look out the effectiveness of the developed products. In this test, there was no control group. It was because of the limitation of time and school regulation. The learning outcomes from pre-test and post-test were compared to find the significant values. Data collection used interview guides, validation sheets, and assessment questionnaires. Data analysis technique used Anova test with significant value of 0.05. The outcome indicates the products categorized as “good”, according to material experts and media experts. The products implementation was also in “good” category. There was a difference of the final outcomes between “before the treatment” and “after the treatment” using the action songs, with p < 0.05 and there was a significant increase with p = 0.007. Keywords: action songs, basic vocabulary, local content, young learners
