Abstract

This study aims to reveal: (1) the affective problems introvert students experience in learning to speak English and (2) their strategies as their psychological efforts to cope with the problems in learning to speak English. This study applied the phenomenological approach. It was conducted at a public senior high school located in one of the districts in Jawa Tengah from June to August 2018. The participants were five introvert students grade XII in the academic year 2017/2018 who had just completed the National Examination. Characteristics’ checklist of personality was used to ensure the participants’ personality as introvert. Students’ reflective writing and unstructured interview was used to collect the data. The data were organized, summarized and interpreted by using the three C’s of analysis (coding, categorizing, and concepts) to get the essence of the participants’ lived experiences. The findings are as follows. (1) The participants experienced two main affective problems in learning to speak English: anxiety and inhibition. Their anxiety was caused by communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluations from friends, and apprehension over evaluations from the teacher. Furthermore, the inhibition was closely related to the problems of self-esteem and self-efficacy. Those problems were found hindering the participants to achieve success in learning to speak English. (2) The participants made psychological efforts as achievement strategies in oral communication of English. The achievement strategies consisted of cooperative and non-cooperative strategies that they made as their mental and physical efforts. They applied those strategies in order to achieve success in coping with anxiety and inhibition as their affective problems in learning to speak English. Keywords: learning English speaking skill, introvert personality, affecctive problems, achievement strategies as psychological efforts
