Abstract
This study aims to enhance students' reading comprehension through metacognitive strategy for grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta in the 2016/2017 academic year. It is a classroom action research (CAR) study with two cycles in which the first cycle consists of four meetings and the second one comprises three meetings. The stages in this CAR include determining problems, planning, action, observation, and reflection. It was conducted in Grade XI of Social Program (IPS) 2 at senior high school SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta in the 2016/2017 academic year. There were 37second-semester students involved in this study. The data were collected by two main techniques. The qualitative data were obtained from reading scores analyzed by the Microsoft Excel program, and were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study reveals the following findings. Firstly, the participation of students in the learning process have increased from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. Secondly, there is an improvement in the students’ reading comprehension whilst using metacognition strategy by doing group learning; the success emphasized more on the working strategy, the material, and the varied classroom management. Thirdly, the metacognitive strategy was able to support the students to be independent in doing the tasks in the worksheet well. Finally, the students’ reading comprehensionby using metacognitive strategy improves when learning was carried out in groups rather than individually. The average score of students worksheets increases from 72.19 in Cycle 1 to 76.43 in Cycle 2.
