Abstract

This paper attempted to report the correspondence between the usage frequency of particular linguistic feature found in corpus linguistics and constructions of –ing form composed by Indonesia learners; the tendency in constructing –ing form, the accuracy of construction, and misconceptions perceived in constructing –ingforms. The total participants were 100 students that were divided into 4 groups (1st semester, 3rd semester, 5th semester, and 7th semester). The group respectively comprised 25 students. The –ing form construction was selected as the main English linguistic element of the research. In the term of different frequency criteria, 5 matrix verbs that allowed particular –ing form structure were selected and composed into 2 or 4 various constructions. The data were then collected by using writing test. Students’ constructions were analyzed based on error analysis to determine the count of correction. The accuracy and students preference were then counted using descriptive statistics. The finding confirmed that higher frequency of –ing form usage occurred in corpus linguistics corresponded with students’ constructional schemas or preference. Nonetheless the higher frequency of particular –ing form usage was frequently occurred students’ constructions were not so accurate mainly for low-level students or the groupwith lower semester. Numerous errors found in the construction; incomplete application of rules, ignorance of rule restriction, false-concept hypothesized.
