Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate: (1) the differences in university students’ intercultural competence by English language proficiency, gender and study program (2) the relationship between language proficiency and intercultural competence, (3) the relationship between gender and intercultural competence, and (4) the influence of English language proficiency and gender on university students’ intercultural competence. This study was a correlational research which investigate the relationship among variables as well as the influence of independent variables on dependent variable. The participants of this study were 357 university students in one of universities in Yogyakarta taking English class from the second to sixth semester. The data were collected through questionnaire adapted from Assessment of Intercultural Competence (AIC) by Fantini (2006). The questionnaire measured intercultural competence through four dimensions of knowledge, attitude, skill, and awareness. Further, the researcher also collected the students’ TOEFL scores from the university and the question about gender was put in the questionnaire sheet. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. The findings in this study show that: (1) there were significant differences in intercultural competence due to differences in language proficiency levels and study programs of the participants, and there was no significant difference in intercultural competence due to differences in gender, (2) there was a significant positive relationship between language proficiency and intercultural competence, (3) there was no significant positive relationship between gender and intercultural competence, and (4) there was a significant influence of English language proficiency on participants’ intercultural competence, and gender had no significant influence on participants’ intercultural competence.
