Abstract

The objectives of this research were to identify conceptual metaphors in Indonesian political discourse, to analyze the source domains of the metaphors, and to analyze how the metaphors were translated into English. The data were obtained from weekly Tempo Magazine from January to March 2018. There were total 29 political news articles in the magazines. Metaphor Idenfication Procedure (MIP) was used in metaphor identification to avoid intuition during the identification process. Pilah Unsur Penentu (PUP) and Hubung Banding Menyamakan (HBS) were used in data analysis. This research found that conceptual metaphors were highly pervasive in Indonesian political discourse. There were at least 1.165 conceptual metaphors which come from a variaety of source domains such as wars, journeys, business, seats, theaters, sports, liquid, games, foods, marriages, colors, and buildings. For the large data dan the complex source domain classification, this research only focused on the five dominat metaphors: WAR metaphor, JOURNEY metaphor, BUSINESS metaphor, SEAT metaphor, and THEATER metaphor with total 481 metaphorical expressions. From 481 metaphorical expression, 267 or 55.6% were translated by providing the same source domain in target text, 93 or 19.. 3% were translated by replacing the source domain of metaphor in target text, 90 or 18.% were translated by conversing the metaphor to its sense or paraphrase, and 31 0r 6.4% were deleting metaphor in target text. Based on the result of translation analysis, it can be concluded that conceptual metaphors were also pervasive in English political discourse. This research also found that Indonesian and English use several similar source domains to structure the politics.
