Abstract

This research aimed to describe: (1) the effectiveness of Simple-Code, Code-Mixing, and Conventional techniques, (2) which technique is more effective, Simple-Code or Conventional, (3) which technique is more effective, Code-Mixing or Conventional, and (4) which technique is more effective, Simple- Code or Code-Mixing for language teaching process to the students‟ at the seventh grade of SMPN 8 Yogyakarta. This research belonged to quantitative research which conducted research design of True Experimental Design by using Pretest and Post-test Control Group. There were two variables involved, i.e. the techniques used in the teaching process as the independent variables and the students‟ achievement as the dependent variable. The research population was the students of grade seven of SMPN 8 Yogyakarta in academic year 2017/2018. The data were collected through four language skills tests, which was conducted by giving multiple-choice questions for listening and reading tests, then, asking the students to describe something orally in front of the class as the speaking test, and for writing test, the students were asked to describe something through writing. The data were analyzed by using One-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe test. The results of the research show that: (1) Simple-Code, Code-Mixing, and Conventional techniques have significant differences in effectiveness for language teaching process, indicated by F = 11.508 with (p) < 0.05 (0.000< 0.05), (2) Simple-Code is more effective than Conventional technique with with (p) < 0.05 (0.000< 0.05), (3) Code-Mixing is more effective than Conventional technique with (p) < 0.05 (0.024< 0.05), (4) Simple-Code and Code-Mixing are not significantly different but they have different level of effectiveness by looking at the mean score, 83.50 for Simple-Code and 80.91 for Code-Mixing which show that the mean score of the students that were taught by Simple-Code is higher than Code-Mixing, and it concludes that Simple-Code is more effective than Code- Mixing. Keywords: Simple-Code, Code-Mixing, Students’ Achievement
