Abstract

This research aimed to: (1) identify the needs of the students of the English department at Islamic universities, (2) develop a literature-based reading instrucional model, (3) describe the internal and external validation of the developed model, and (4) reveal the effectiveness of the developed model. This developmental research referred to the model adapted from Borg & Gall (1983) including the steps of research and information collecting, planning, developing preliminary form of product, preliminary field testing, main product revision, main field testing, and operational product revision. This research was conducted in three Islam-affiliated universities in Metro, Lampung namely Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro, Institut Agama Islam NU Metro, and Institut Agama Islam Negeri Metro. The field testing subject was 66 second year students of the English Department of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Metro in the academic year of 2016/2017. The data were collected through a questionnaire, semistructured interview, documentation, observation, and test and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the Mann-Whitney U test and analysis of covariance at the significance level of .05. This research reveals seven findings. First, the students of the English department at Islam-affiliated university tend to read literary texts which are derived from international, national, and Islamic sources. Second, the visualized framework of the literature-based reading instructional model should include such components as philosophy, input, process, and output. Third, the developed model is conceptually well-developed according to the experts’ validation. Fourth, the instructional kit of the developed model is practical according to the practitioners’ validation. Fifth, the students find the learning materials and learning activities contextual and interesting. Sixth, the teacher find the implementation of the developed model practical and advantageous. Seventh, the ANCOVA computation confirms that the developed model is significantly effective in enhancing the students’ reading achievement. Keywords: instructional model, literature-based reading, Islam-affiliated university
