Abstract

Translation of idioms is classified as translation which requires a ‘special’ strategies since the meaning contained cannot be determined easily. It also requires extensive knowledge and culture understanding of the source language and target language since idioms are closely related to the culture of the language. With regard to this, this research aims to reveal the forms of idioms in the Pride and Prejudice novels, the types of idioms found, the strategies used by translator to translate the idioms and accuracy and acceptability from the translation of the idioms. This research is qualitative descriptive research. The source of the data of this study is an English novel entitled Pride and Prejudice and its translation in Indonesian. The data collection was done by reading and taking notes, and the data analysis was carried out using padan method. The data validity was measured through intrarater and interrater. Intrarater was done by reading and observing research subjects repeatedly and carefully to obtain adequate data. Interrater was done by asking for English experts of the data analysis. The experts are an English lecturer and graduate students who takes the concentration of English translation. The results showed that there were 242 idioms in the novel. There were 190 idioms or 78.51% were phrase. It means that out of 242 idioms found in the novel, most of them were in the form of phrases. Out of 242 idioms, 131 idioms or 54.13% were lexemic idioms of Type I (Verbal Phrase Idiom), 56 idioms or 23.14% were lexemic idioms of Type II (Tournune Idiom), 49 idioms or 19.2% were lexemic idioms of Type IV (Compound Idiom), three 3 idioms or 1.24% were lexemic idioms of Type III (Binominal Irreversible Idiom), and three idioms or 1.24% were lexemic idioms of Type V (Combined Idiom). Lexemic idioms of Type VI (Pseudo Idiom) were not found in this novel. Of the four strategies used by translator, the paraphrasing strategy was the strategy most frequently used by the translator. There were 218 idioms or 90.08% which were translated by using this strategy, the accuracy of the translation in the novel was 74.79%. This means 61 idioms were not translated accurately.
