Abstract

The aims of this study are: (1) to know the students’ needs related the design of the internalized speaking materials with Islamic values for grade VII students of language class program in SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta, and (2) to figure out the appropriateness of the designed materials. This is a research and development (R&D) study. The research and development model employed in this study is Jolly and Bolitho model. The subjects of the study were grade VII students of Language Class Program at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta. The instruments used to collect the data in this study were questionnaires, interviews guides, and observation sheets. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result of the target needs indicated that the students were expected to learn English in order to obtain the speaking skills in term of daily communication. The learning need results including activities and materials displayed that most students need the speaking materials inculcated with Islamic values. The doctrine of faith, worship, obedience to parents, patience, humble, and good communication values are embedded in the materials. Those values are reflected in QS. Luqman. The supplementary textbook entitle “FAST English” embodied six units which has 14 learning activates in unit 1 to unit 5, and 15 learning activities in the last unit. Each unit covers (a) unit title covering a related ayah for the internalized values, and learning objectives; (b) let’s get ready as the warm up activity; (c) the main activity covering let’s learn (pre-communicative activities) and let’s learn more (communicative activities); and (d) the reinforcement consisting of assessment for learning, self-reflection, and summary. The appropriateness of the materials was evaluated in terms of content, presentation and sequences, language, and layout. Regarding the theoretical validation, the appropriateness of designed materials were categorized as “very good” based on the expert judgment since the mean score is 3.54 and within the interval 3.28 ≤ x ≤ 4. In terms of empirical validation, the appropriateness of the designed materials were categorized as “very good” based on the students’ agreements due to the score 3.39 in the interval 3.28 ≤ x ≤ 4.
