Abstract

This sociolinguistic study deals with the relationship between language and society, especially among Korean accent, English and Koreans. This study is aiming to analyze Korean-accented English in John Legend’s All of Me song sung by Koreans. There are two objectives in this study. First is to identify the general characteristics of Korean-accented English in the lyrics of All of Me through the orthography of the lyrics, including the original English lyrics, the Hangeul version, and the Romanization version. Second is to describe and explain the pronunciation problems in terms of the position of the organ of speech, the word merger, the elimination of physical sound, and the phonetic feature. The present study employed mixed methods, which are descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The data were the transcript and pronunciation of English words by Koreans. The findings of the study are presented in forms of texts as well as number and percentage. The data analysis was triangulated by other researchers and theories. The finding of the study consists of two points. First, there are only ten Korean consonants which are used as the equivalent of English words in the lyrics of All of Me song. The sounds produced are not common in Standard English pronunciation. The sounds include those represented by characters ㄱ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, and ㅆ, which have total 63 data. From those ten characters, the use of each character is categorized into three positions, which are initial, medial, and final. In syllabic initial position, character ㅋ, which represents sound /kh/ is the most used, with frequency of seven times. Whereas in syllabic medial position, character ㅂ which represents sound /’b’/ appears most frequently, with six data. Lastly in syllabic final position, character ㅂ is the most frequently used character, with appearance of eight times. However, this character stands for letter /p/ as syllabic final. Thus, some characters in Korean writing system can function as more than one sound according to the position of character. Second, there are four types of pronunciation problems faced by Koreans when singing All of Me. They are the position of the organ of speech, word merger, the elimination of physical sound, and phonetic features. Most of problems in the pronunciation are caused by the position of the organ of speech, which appear 58 times. The second problem is related to the phonetic features, with 45 times of appearance. The third type is the elimination of physical sound, appearing 36 times. The last but not least is the merger of words, which only has 25 times of occurrence
