Abstract

The aims of this research are (1) to design the integrated-skills materials for the four graders students of Muhammadiyah elementary school, (2) to find out the appropriateness of integrated-skills materials developed. The type of this research was Research and Development (R&D). The research model used in this research was Dick and Carey (2005) model which consisted of ten procedures. The procedure of this research was modified into analyzing the needs, designing the course grid, designing the first draft, conducting expert judgment, revising the first draft, trying out the materials, evaluating the materials, and writing the final draft. The subject of the research were four graders students of SD Muhammadiyah Wirobrajan 3 and SD Muhammadiyah Bantul Kota. The purposive sampling was employed to select the subject of the research. The data collection techniques of this research were survey, interview and observation. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires and interview guidelines and observation sheets. The descriptive qualitative and descriptive statistic were used to analyze the data obtained. The result of this study is the integrated-skills materials for students entitled “Let’s Learn English” completed with a CD containing English songs. In terms of the target needs, the students were expected to learn English in order to obtain the knowledge and skills to communicate using English. Regarding to the learning needs, the students preferred using the pictures, videos, and the texts which are related to the students’ life. The students also needed to learn four English skills. In terms of their wants, the students liked to learn English by listening English songs and reading short stories, arranging pictures or sentences, playing games, and having dialogues. The students liked to study in pairs, individually, and in a group consists of 3-4 students or more. The book entitled “Let’s learn English” consisted of 13 to 15 activities which has six units. The appropriateness of the learning materials was shown in terms of content, language, presentation, and graphics. The developed materials were categorized into “very good” based on the expert evaluation. It achieved a final mean score of 3.7 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4. The results of materials evaluation based on the students’ evaluation were categorized into “very good” which achieved 92.25%. The materials consisted of six lessons which present the warming-up activity, main activity (integrated skills activities, games, and grammar notes), glossary, reflection and general knowledge containing Islamic values.
