Abstract

This research was aimedto find out(1) whether the use of comic strip wasmore effective than the use of story mapin increasing students’ reading comprehension, (2) whether the use of comic strip wasmore effective than the use of conventional media in increasing students’ reading comprehension, (3) whether the use of story mapwasmore effective than the use of conventional media in students’ reading comprehension, (4) the most effective medium among the use of comic strip, story mapand conventional media in improving students’ reading comprehension. This research was quasi-experimental research which involved two experimental groups and a control group. The samples werethree classes of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Pundong, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The variables of the research were comic strip and story mapas the independent variable. The dependent variable was students’ reading comprehension. The data collection used a pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was ANCOVA. The result of the research showsthat(1)the use of comic strip wasmore effective than the use of story mapin students’ improving reading comprehension by the results of Least Significant Difference(LSD)test with a mean difference of 0.074and a significance of p 0.021waslower than 0.05, (2) the use of comic strip was more effective than the use of conventional media in students’ increasing reading comprehension by the results of LSD test with a mean difference of 0.265and a significance of p 0.00 waslower than 0.05, (3) the use of story mapwasmore effective than the use of conventional media in students’ reading comprehensionby the results of LSD test with a mean difference of 0.191and a significance of p 0.00 waslower than 0.05, (4)the most effective media in teaching students’ reading comprehension wasthe use of comicstrip which wasproved by the mean difference in LSD test that indicates the positive result.
