Abstract
This study aimed to develop English for specific purposesmaterials for mechanical engineering students, based on Resource-based Learning (RBL) theory. The research design was research and development, adapting the research procedure proposed by Borg and Gall(1983) and Sukmadinata (2013), which coversthe needs analysis, syllabus writing, developing preliminary materials, preliminary field testing (expert judgment and tryout), and final draft revision. The subjects were 92 second-year students ofDiploma III Mechanical Engineering Department, Vocational School,UniversitasGadjahMada(80 males, 12 females). The data were gathered through surveys, a semi-structured interview, and document analysis. The surveys and the document were analyzed quantitatively, while the interview transcriptswereanalyzedqualitatively. The product of this study was a set of ESP materials for mechanical engineering students based on the resource-based learning theory. The results of expert judgment and tryout revealed that the developed RBL materials were considered “very good” because they met the five criteria of appropriate materials with the following mean scores: Curriculum Fit (4; 3.79), Content and Tasks (3.98; 3.81), Instructional Design (3.81; 3.88), Technical Design (3.63; 3.86), and Learning resources (3.86; 3.85). The developed RBL materials for mechanical engineering students also had high quality since they met the four parameters of the overall evaluation, namely suitability, generalizability, adaptability, and flexibility.
