Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) to describe and classify taboo language and euphemism form used in the novel and (2) explain whether the translation novel "Beauty is a Wound” maintaining taboo language and euphemism forms contained in the novel “Cantik itu Luka" or not. This research belongs to descriptive-qualitative research. The source of data were two novels in both Indonesian (source text, ST) and bahasa Indonesia (target text, TT). The data were the sentences containing taboo language and euphemism forms. The techniques of data collection were scrutinize method with tapping technique as the basic technique. The technique was followed by free scrutiny including conversation and note-taking technique. Translational identity method was applied in analyzing the data. The research instrument was the researcher herself. In validating the data, the researcher firstly confirmed it with the related theory. Then, the data were checked by intra-rater, a person who was master on the topic being discussed. The result of the research shows some points. Firstly, kinds of taboo words which are found in the novel are taboo of delicacy and taboo of propriety. There are 9 data belongs to taboo of delicacy, and 40 data belongs to taboo of propriety. Secondly, euphemism forms which are found in the novel are borrowing, semantic change, word formation device, and phonemic modification. There are 5 data belongs to borrowing, 41 data belongs to semantic change, 1 data belongs to word formation device, and 9 data belongs to phonemic modification. Thirdly, The translation novel “Beauty is a Wound” maintains the taboo language and euphemism forms. The translator mostly use formal equivalence. It can be seen when the translator maintains the taboo words and euphemism forms by translating similar like the source novel.
