Abstract

The aims of this research were (1) to develop an English supplementary book of Curriculum 2013 using genre-based approach for grade VII students of junior high schools in Yogyakarta, and (2) to find out the appropriateness of the developed English supplementary book. This was a research and development (R & D) research adopted from the theory of Branch (2009). The subjects were grade VII students of junior high school in Yogyakarta which the sample of population were taken from three different levels of schools namely high level, middle level, and low level which were represented by 30 students of SMP N 8 Yogyakarta (high level), 32 students of SMP N 9 Yogyakarta (middle level), and 33 students of MTs N 2 Bantul (low level). The overall subject was 95 students of academic year 2017/2018. Questionnaire and interview guideline were used to collect data. The data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. This research resulted: (1) an English Supplementary book of Curriculum 2013 using the genre-based approach for grade VII students of Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta. This product was in line with the students’ and teachers’ needs from three different levels of schools by referring to the Core Competence and Basic Competence of Curriculum 2013 revised in 2016 and genre-based approach. Thus, the supplementary book of Curriculum 2013 consisted of six units including different themes. (2) The developed book was appropriate. It can be showed that the result of the experts’ judgement showed the average of all aspects was 3.55. Then, the result of product try out showed the average score 3.44 from the teachers and 3.60 from the students. Therefore, the average was categorized as very good. It could be concluded that the developed product was effective, valid, and appropriate for the students of Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta.
