Abstract

The aims of this study were to develop materialsbased on local culture by using the integrated performance assessment for the appropriateness of the developed materials. This study was research and development. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Muntilan. The study procedure was adapted from ADDIE models proposed by Branch (2009). The steps were analyzing students’ needs, designing course grid, developing the materials, implementing the materials, and evaluating the materials by the judgmentof experts, students andteacher. The data were collected through questionnaires consisting of need analysis questionnaire, expert judgment rating scale, interview transcripts, and questionnaire for students about the materials. The data from the needs analysis, the expert judgment questionnaire, and the questionnaire for students about the materials were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and percentage. Meanwhile, the data from the interview were analyzeddescriptively. The first product was revised based on theresult of expert judgment questionnaire to get the final product. There were six unitsof materialsdeveloped entitled Let’sExplore with English. The materials in the developed materials were developed based on Curriculum 2013. Based on the learning needs, students wantedmaterials which used culture and challenging activities so they couldengage with the teaching and learning process. The number of the activities in each unit was different but they hadthe same unit design. The first unitwas entitled Which one is cheaper?, the second Going on an Adventure, the third What Happened, the fourth Experiencing the Culture, the fifth Short Messages, and the sixth Indonesian Stories. The materials were adapted from some sources to develop the materials whichwereappropriate with the learning needs and the target needs. Based on expert judgment evaluation, the materials were categorized as very good because the mean score was 3.81whichwasin the range of x≥ 3.53. The research findings of students’ evaluation also showed that the developed materials wereconsidered as appropriate. The mean resultwas 3.81 so it was categorized as very good.
