Abstract

This research aimed at developing speaking learning materials to support character education of grade VII students and finding out the appropriateness of the developed materials. This was a research and development (R&D) study. This research followed the model proposed by Jolly and Bolitho (1998). The development of the learning materials was carried out through several steps, namely identification of needs for materials, exploration of need, contextual realisation of materials, pedagogical realisation of materials, production of materials and students use, and evaluation of materials. The subjects of this research were grade VII students of SMP N 12 Yogyakarta. The purposive sampling was employed to select the research subjects. The data were collected through survey, interview, and observation. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires, interview protocol, and observation sheet. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and descriptive qualitative. This research developed six units of learning materials. In terms of target needs, basically, the students expected to be able to speak English accurately and appropriately to ask for and give information about people, animals, and things. Regarding the learning needs, the students expected lists of vocabulary and how to pronounce them. In addition, they liked to use videos as the learning media. The students also liked to have various activities, such as listening and imitating words, phrases, or sentences, describing pictures, and having dialogue. They also preferred to work in a small group. The appropriateness of the learning materials was viewed in terms of content, language, presentation, layout, audio, and character values instilled in the materials.The developed materials were categorized into “very appropriate” based on the expert judgment evaluation. It achieved a final mean score of 3.85 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4. The results of materials evaluation based on the students’ evaluation were categorized into “very appropriate”. It achieved a final mean score of 3.75. The features of the unit materials consisted of get started, let’s focus, put in practice, and speak out loud.
