Abstract

This research aims to describe (1) the types of slang expressions found in the film and (2) the subtitling strategies in translating the slang expressions applied by the translator in The Simpsons Movie. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were all slang expressions that are found in the dialog, which was in English and their Indonesian translations. The main instrument of the research was the researcher herself, while the data sheet was employed as the secondary instrument. The data were categorized based on two theories, those are: the slang type proposed by Willis and subtitling strategies proposed by Gottlieb. To achieve the data trustworthiness, the data sheets are repeatedly checked by the researcher and some peers and the results are discussed with the supervisor. This research shows two findings. The first one is the slang expressions found in The Simpsons Movie. The researcher founds that new invention is more commonly used than the standard expression. It shows that the scriptwriter of the movie tends to create a new word for the slang rather than using standard word and changing the meaning. The second one is concerned with the subtitling strategies applied by the translator in translating the slang expressions. They are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, condensation, decimation, and deletion. Transfer as the most used subtitling strategy indicated that the translator tries to maintain the form and the meaning of the slang expressions so that the meaning can be delivered well. the translator looks up the meaning of the slang expressions that exist in the movie. Instead of translates it roughly, the translator tends to learn or maybe he already knew the culture of the characters in the movie and he applies transfer mostly in his work by translating the slang expressions accurately because he knows the meaning of the slang expressions.
