Abstract

This research is aimed (1) to reveal kinds of gender discrimination faced by women in Chinese patriarchal society in Amy Tan’s The Kitchen God’s Wife, and (2) to explain the struggles of the women characters toward gender discrimination in the novel. To answer the objectives, the researcher used feminist literary criticism. This research is a qualitative study applying content analysis method. The object of this research is a novel entitled The Kitchen God’s Wife written by Amy Tan in 1991 and the data are words, phrases, clauses and sentences related to the kind of gender discrimination and the struggles in the novel. The primary instrument in this research was the researcher and the secondary instrument was any kind of tools and devices that supporting the researcher during the data collecting and analyzing process. In order to gain reliability, the researcher read and re-read the novel carefully and then recorded the data into a systematic framework based on the theory. In achieving credibility and validity of the findings, the researcher implemented triangulation technique to gain the trustworthiness of the data. The results of this research show that there are four kinds of gender discrimination faced by women in Chinese patriarchal society: stereotype, violence, marginalization, and subordination. There are influencing factor to struggle toward gender discrimination, having consciousness on being discriminated and being bond in sisterhood. To survive toward gender discrimination, women do some struggles that come in four forms namely showing resistance by speaking up against the male’s domination, getting abortion as self-control over reproductive right, determining on getting divorced from the abusive husband, becoming economically independent by opening a flower shop.
