Abstract

This study aimed at improving the writing skills of the first semester students of the English Education Department of Yogyakarta State University by implementing the genre-based approach. This study was a collaborative action research involving the researcher, a collaborator, and the first semester students of the English Education Department. The research followed the model proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart which consisted of planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data of this research were collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The data were recorded in the forms of field notes, questionnaire responses, transcripts, and test scores. The validities to be met were democratic, dialogic, catalytic, process, and result validities, while the reliability was gained through data triangulation. The data were analyzed by employing the data analysis model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana which consisted of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the research showed that the students’ writing skills improved by implementing the genre-based approach. The problems and difficulties faced by the students in writing could be diminished through the implementation of this approach. In BKOF and MOT stages, the students acquired the vocabulary related to the topic, and also the knowledge about the generic structure and language features of the text. In JCOT and ICOT stages, the students were able to practice writing in accordance with the text being studied. The results of students’ writing scores showed a significant increase, from 65.6 in the pre-test, to 80.4 in cycle one, and to 84.6 in cycle two.
