Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop English-speaking materials for the trainees in Tour Guide Training Program at Bali Java Tour agency. This study focused in developing speaking materials which have suitable contents and meet the needs of trainees for the Tour Guide Training program. This research is a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of this research were the trainees of the Tour Guide Training Program at Bali Java Tour agency. The research was conducted through the following steps: conducting the needs analysis, developing a course grid, developing the first draft, conducting the expert judgment and revising, product testing, revising, final implementation, material evaluation, and developing the final product of the materials. In this research, the instruments are interview guidelines, needs analysis questionnaires, expert judgment questionnaires, and students’ view questionnaires about the materials. Then, the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative analysis. The product of this research consists of three units of speaking materials. Each unit of the materials consists of introduction, main lesson, and reinforcement part. The introduction part consists of the unit title and learning objectives. The main lesson part consists of warming up and main activities. It has 12 tasks that focus on improving students’ listening and speaking skills where most of the tasks are done in pairs. The types of tasks are mostly listening to recordings, determining true-false statements, answering W/H questions, matching words, and making dialogues. The reinforcement part consists of the role-play activities and students’ checkbox. Based on the results of the expert’s judgment questionnaire, the content, the language, the presentation, and the layout of the developed materials are appropriate. The mean score of all aspects is 3.7, while the mean score of the result of students’ view about the material is 3.7. Therefore the developed materials are categorized “Very Good”.
