Abstract

This research aims to design appropriate interactive learning multimedia of reading for the eighth grade students of Junior High School. This is a research and development (R&D) study. This development study refers to a model proposed by Alessi & Trollip (2001). The procedure of interactive learning multimedia development consisted of planning, design, and development. Product trials were conducted in two test phases, namely Alpha testing and Beta testing. The alpha testing was the first test that was conducted by the material and media experts. After conducting the alpha testing, the beta testing was conducted by the English teacher and students. The subjects of this research were the eighth grade students of SMPN 9 Yogyakarta. The subjects of the operational product testing in the first try out consisted of 9 students and that in the last try out consisted of 35 students of class VIIIA chosen randomly. The data collection used an interview guide and questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed for needs analysis, expert validation, English teacher and students’ responses toward the developed interactive learning multimedia. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics for the questionnaires and the qualitative analysis technique for the interview. The research findings reveal that the interactive learning multimedia of reading in terms of the material and media aspects is categorized “very good” by the experts with the mean scores put on the conversion interval ≥ 3.53. Generally, the result of try out both the first and last try out falls in the “very good” category. Furthermore, the data obtained from the English teacher’s responses toward the interactive learning multimedia show the range of average mean score 3.73 which is categorized “very good”. Therefore, the developed interactive learning multimedia is very appropriate to use in teaching and learning process of reading.
