Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate (1) whether the use of digital storytelling is more effective than the use of picture series as medium in teaching writing skill, (2) whether the use of digital storytelling as medium is more effective than the use of conventional medium in teaching writing skill, (3) whether the use of picture series as medium is more effective than the use of conventional medium, and (4) the most effective medium among digital storytelling, picture series, and conventional medium. This study was an experimental research which used Quasi Pre-test Post-test Control Group design. The population of the study was all of the eleventh grade students in one of Senior High School in Purworejo. There were three classes used as the sample of this study which were drawn using simple cluster random sampling. The variables included the independent variables and the dependent variable. The independent variables were digital storytelling, picture series, and conventional medium, while the dependent variable was writing skill. The writing tests were used as the research instruments and were validated through expert judgment and a content validity. The reliability of the instruments was measured by using inter- rater reliability. The technique of data analysis used in this study was a parametric statistical technique of ANOVA test and continued by Scheffe test. Furthermore, the data were calculated using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) ver. 20 computer program. The findings of this study reveal that (1) the use of digital storytelling is more effective than the use of picture series as medium and it is indicated by the value of Sig. (0.016) which is lower than 0.05 and the mean difference indicates the positive result, i.e. 1.32, (2) the use of digital storytelling as medium is more effective than the use of conventional medium as indicated by the value of Sig. (0.000) which is lower than 0.05 and the mean difference indicates positive result, i.e. 2.93, (3) the use of picture series as medium is more effective than the use of conventional medium as indicated by the value of Sig. (0.03) which is lower than 0.05, and the mean difference is positive, i.e. 1.61, and (4) the most effective medium in teaching writing skill is the use of digital storytelling which is proved by the mean difference in Scheffe test that indicates the positive result.
