Abstract

This research aimed to improve students’ reading skill through collaborative strategic reading (CSR) for class VIII A of MTs al-Ma’arif. This research was a classroom action research in which there were four steps, namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting.The researcher conducted this research for class VIII A of MTs al-Ma’arif Gembong in the second semester of the academic year 2015/2016. The research subject was the students of class VIII A and the research objects were reading skill and collaborative strategic reading. The data collection techniques were observation interview, and test. The data analysis was inductive analysis which consisted of three steps, organization, description, and an interpretation by using SPSS program. The data validity involved democratic, result, process, catalytic and dialogic validity. The data reliability used the research assessment. The criteria of success used five parameters, including achieving the passing grade, summarizing the content of the text in the short time, being active, reconstructing what the writer’s meaning, and identifying main idea well. The results of the research show that CSR can improve students’ reading skill. The improvement is indicated by the students skill in summarizing the content of text in the short time, being active, reconstructing what the writer’s meaning, and identifying main idea well. The other hand, the achievement of the passing grade is indicated by the average score of the test from pre-test to post-test cycle 3 which increased. The result of pretest showed that the average of the score was 40.9 (20%), post test in cycle I was 49.8 (31%), post test in cycle II was 50.5 (37%), and the average score of the post test in cycle III was 51.2 (57%).
