Abstract

This Educational Research and Development (R&D) has a major objective to design appropriate computer-assisted media promoting HOTS to teach writing for the eleventh grade students of social study program in SMA N 8 Yogyakarta. Therefore, in order to fulfill the objective some procedures were then employed. In this study, the material development model proposed by Jolly and Bolitho (1998) and the media development model proposed by Ivers and Barron (2010) was tried to combine by the researcher. The procedures of developmental design consisted of eight steps: (1) identification of needs for materials, (2) exploration of needs, (3) contextual realization of materials, (4) pedagogical realization of materials, (5) production of materials, (6) evaluation from the experts, (7) student use of media, and (8) evaluation from the students. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of social study program at SMA N 8 Yogyakarta. The data was collected through questionnaires (needs analysis, expert judgments, and students’ evaluation questionnaire). This research applied both qualitative and quantitative methods in analyzing the data. After conducting this research, the researcher found that the appropriate computer assisted media to teach writing for the eleventh grade students of the social study program is the HOTS-based digital media named STRIKING. The materials included in the media are divided into three units containing opening (Let’s Get Started), content (Let’s Discuss), and closing (Let’s Check Your Competence) parts. This study suggests that STRIKING digital media is considered appropriate to be implemented to the students based on the result of the evaluation from the content expert, the media expert, and the tryouts. It is proved by the mean value of the result questionnaires of the material expert 4.20 categorized into “good”, of the media expert 4.30 categorized into “very good”, of the small group students 4.10 categorized into “good”, and of the large group students 4.02 categorized into “good”.
