Abstract

This study is aimed at: (1) investigating types of culture incorporated in English textbooks for the students of senior high schools, (2) revealing the aspects of culture incorporated in English textbooks for the students of senior high schools and analyzing their representations, and (3) revealing the orientations of culture in English textbooks for the students of senior high schools. This study employed typological analysis. The research subjects in this study were four selected English textbooks used by grade XI students of senior high schools entitled Look Ahead, the Bridge English Competence, Pathway to English, and Bahasa Inggris. They were selected by employing a purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by adopting documentary technique of data collection. In order to do so, the check list of culture aspects and data sheets were employed. Then, the data were analyzed using the qualitative analysis technique elaborated with typological analysis. After that, the data were presented descriptively. At last, the conclusions were drawn. This study reveals three findings. First, types of culture incorporated in English textbooks mostly portray local culture and target culture. The local culture includes national and regional culture of Indonesia while target culture mostly includes the culture from inner circle and outer circle of English speaking countries. Second, the aspects of culture incorporated in English textbooks represent products, persons, practices, and perspectives. The aspect of products present: food, fashions, movies, traditional artifacts, literatures, and statues. The aspect of people present: artists, athletes, scientists, publicist, and politicians. The aspect of practices present: leisure activities, hobbies, sports, games, and customs. The aspect of perspectives present: beliefs, morals, attitudes, world views, and critics. They are presented in the form of dialogues, listening scripts, reading texts, writing texts, and pictures. Third, the orientations of culture in all English textbooks are mostly oriented to BANA (British, Australians, and North American) context, except English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris as it is oriented to the local culture.
