Abstract

IMPLEMENTING PROJECT WORK TO IMPROVE THE WRITING SKILLS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 NGAGLIK IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2012/2013 RR. RATRI ISNANINGSIH 06202244026 Abstract This action research is aimed at improving the students’ writing skills through project work for the tenth grade in SMA Negeri 1 Ngaglik in the academic year of 2012/2013. The project work was combined with two accompanying actions; using process-based writing and classroom English. The steps were reconnaissance, planning, actions and observation, and reflection. The collected data were mostly qualitative although there were some quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the actions, interviewing students, and holding discussions with the English teacher. The qualitative data were in the form of field notes and interview transcripts. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained by assessing the students’ writing through writing tasks. The result shows that the application of project work has successfully made the students able to produce written works. It can be seen from the pre-test and post-test result. The pre-test average score was 14.32 and for the post-test were 24.36. moreover, project work also could: (1) make the students get better understanding of the process on how to write procedure texts, (2) make the students get better understanding of identifying the components of a procedure text, (3) make the students have better attitudes toward writing procedure texts, (4) make the students overcome their writing problem in five aspects of writing which include content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic, (5) make the students perform better writing skills and they do not tend to make the same mistakes in their future writing, (6) make improvement of the students’ writing skills. In addition, using classroom English can familiarize the students with English.
