Abstract

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ INVOLVEMENT IN THE ENGLISH TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS AT GRADE FIVE OF SDN SAMIRONO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2010/2011 THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES by: Andina Wijayanti 06202244111 ABSTRACT This research is aimed at improving the students’ involvement in the English teaching and learning process at grade five of SD Negeri Samirono in the academic year of 2010/2011. The research was conducted in two cycles. The steps of the research were: reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the actions, interviewing the English teacher and the students of grade five, and holding discussions with the English teacher and among the research members. The instruments for gathering the data were a recorder, a camera, and interview guidelines. The data were in the forms of field notes, recordings, interview transcripts, and photographs. The researcher applied communicative activities to improve the students’ involvement. It consists of some actions; (1) implementing various engaging activities, (2) using various media, (3) using classroom English effectively, (4) maximizing the implementation of pair work and group work, (5) giving appreciation, good respect, and reward. The result showed that in Cycle 1, there were three actions of communicative activities that needed improvement. They were the use of unclear pictures and the implementations of role-plays and group work. Some unclear pictures made some students who sat in the back row could not see the pictures clearly. Implementing roleplays and group work were unsuccessful because some students made disruptive behaviours. The situation of the class was fairly noisy. There were some improvements in Cycle 2; (1) maximizing varied media could attract the students’ attention, and (2) there was no student busy doing their own activities to make disruptive behaviour when roleplays and group work were applied. From the two cycles, the implementations of communicative activities were effective to improve the students’ involvement in the English teaching and learning process. The research finding shows that communicative activities could; (1) engage the students to get involved actively to do activities in the English learning process, (2) attract the students’ attention during the English lesson, (3) make the students more active and happy joining the learning activities, (4) provide the students more chances to practice their English, so their self-confidence to speak English could be improved, (5) motivate the students to compete with one another.
