Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to find out students’ achievement in descriptive writing which was taught by using Edmodo and Schoology, (2) to figure out the differences of students’ achievement in descriptive writing taught by using Edmodo, Schoology, and the conventional media, and (3) to figure out which one was the most effective media among the media compared in descriptive writing for non-English Department students of Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University. This research was a quasi-experiment study with nonequivalent (pretest and posttest) control group design. The population comprised the non-English department students of UMY in the even semester in the academic year of 2014/2015. The samples of this research were three classes from level 1 which were randomly chosen as two classes were for experiment classes and one as a control class. One of the experiment classes was taught using Edmodo, and the other one used Schoology, whereas the control group was taught without those two learning management systems. The data were collected through the written tests (pretest and posttest). The reliability of the instruments was gained using inter-rater reliability. The correlation coefficient showed r=0.790 for pretest and r=0.845 for posttest. The data were analyzed using the covariant analysis (ANCOVA) and the Scheffe test. The results of the study are as follows: (1) The use of Edmodo gives positive contribution to students’ achievement in descriptive writing. It is shown by the mean score in the posttest raising 0.83 point to 7.29 and the lowest score of the students is 5.00. (2) The use of Schoology can enhance the students’ performance in descriptive writing. This is proved by the result that is getting better in the posttest which obtains the average score of 7.50 with the minimum score 5.33. (3) There are differences among students’ achievement in descriptive writing taught by using Edmodo, Schoology and the conventional media for non-English department students in Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University. (4) The use of Edmodo is more effective than the conventional media for improving students’ achievement in descriptive writing. It is shown by the mean difference 0.9953 and value of p=0.011 < 0.05. (5) The use of Schoology is more effective than the conventional media for improving students’ achievement in descriptive writing. It is shown by the mean difference 1.2053 and value of p=0.003 < 0.05. (6) The use Edmodo is not more effective than Schoology for improving students’ achievement in descriptive writing and vice versa. It is shown by the mean difference -0.21 and p-value of 0.798 which is greater than 0.05 interpreted as no significant difference.
