Abstract

THE EFFECT OF USING PQRST METHOD ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP DIPONEGORO DEPOK IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2011/2012 By Yashinta Nurul Insani 06202244177 ABSTRACT This experimental research study is aimed at finding out whether there is a significant difference in terms of reading comprehension improvements between the students who are taught by using PQRST method and the students who are not taught by using PQRST method in SMP Diponegoro Depok. This study involved 65 students of grade VII in SMP Diponegoro Depok as the subjects of the study. There were 29 students in class VII A and 36 students in class VII B. Class VII B who were chosen as the experimental group and given treatment PQRST method while class VII A was the control group. The experimental group was given PQRST method as a reading strategy in the treatment whereas the control group was not taught by the strategy. The data of the pre-test and post-test of both groups were analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics. The t-test was used to know whether the hypothesis was accepted or not. The results of the data analysis are presented in the following items. Firstly, the mean score gained by the experimental group in the post-test (75.56) is higher than the mean score gained by the control group (64.45). Secondly there is a significant difference between both groups proved by the t-test analysis result. The value of t-observed of the test ( is 5.314 and the value of t-critical in the table ( ) is 1.671. The ( ) is higher than ( ) so the data of the research are considered to have a significant difference. Therefore, the hypothesis of this research “there is significant difference in students reading comprehension ability between those who are taught by using PQRST method and those who are not” is accepted. This means PQRST method is believed to be an effective strategy to improve the students‟ reading ability.
