Abstract
THE EFFECT OF USING GROUP WORK ACTIVITIES ON THE SPEAKING CLASS FOR THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 WATES KULON PROGO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2012/2013 By Okky Erlinda 08202244006 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to find out whether there was a significant difference in the speaking ability between the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Wates, who were taught using group work activities and those who were taught without using group work activities in the academic year of 2012/2013 This study involved 64 students divided into two groups: class VIII C (32 students) as the control group, and class VIII D (32 students) as the experimental group. The data were obtained by means of two speaking tests. They were administered to the two groups as the pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to both groups before the treatment and post-test was given at the end of the treatment. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. The hypothesis was tested using the analysis of covariance. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the speaking achievement between students who were taught using group work activities and those who are taught without using group work activities. It is presented from the result of the test of hypothesis using ANACOVA. The significant value of 0.000 was less than the significance level of 0.05 (F = 31.590) this meant that the use of group work activities significantly improves the students’ speaking achievement in the English teaching and learning in Junior high School.
