Abstract

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY BY USING THE DICTOGLOSS TECHNIQUE AT CLASS VIII D OF SMP NEGERI 3 NGAGLIK IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2011/2012 By Ogie Yudha Herlangga 07202244043 Abstract The objective of this research study was to improve the writing ability by using the dictogloss technique at class VIII D of SMP N 3 Ngaglik in the academic year of 2011/2012. Based on the preliminary observations the problem was concerned with the students that had low ability in writing including punctuation, spelling, and using the appropriate tense. The study consisted of two cycles. The data were obtained by interviewing the students of class VIII D of SMP N 3 Ngaglik, holding discussions with the English teacher, the school principal, and the observer, and doing observations in the teaching and learning process. The instruments for collecting the data were observation guidelines, interview guidelines, and a digital camera. The validity of the data was obtained by applying democratic validity, outcome validity, process validity, and dialogic validity. The research result shows that the use of the dictogloss technique is believed to be effective to improve students’ writing ability. Students’ writing problems can be reduced by applying the dictogloss technique. The reconstruction stage of dictogloss facilitates the students to be able to reconstruct a dictated-text by using their own language. Then the correction-analysis stage provides feedbacks that facilitate them to correct their mistakes in the writing aspects, namely content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics. In reference to the students’ writing scores, the students’ ability in five aspects of writing improved after the dictogloss technique was applied.
