Abstract

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE ENGLISH LESSONS THROUGH THE TEXT-BASED APPROACH AT CLASS XC OF SMA ISLAM 1 GAMPING IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013 By: Fajar Okayanti NIM 07202241056 ABSTRACT The objective of the research was to improve the quality of the English lessons through the text-based approach at class XC of SMA Islam 1 Gamping in the academic year 2012/2013. The researcher applied the text-based approach to improve the quality of the English lessons. This research is an action research study. The research was carried out in the first semester from November 14th to November 29th, 2012. The members consisted of the researcher, the school principal, the English teacher, and the students of class XC. The steps were: reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and reflection. The research was conducted in two cycles. The data were obtained by interviewing the English teacher and the students of class XC, observing the teaching and learning process, taking pictures and videos of the teaching and learning process. The instruments were the researcher, photo camera and interview guidelines. The data were in the forms of audio and video records, interview transcripts, field notes, and photos. The quality of the measures in this research is supported by the triangulation of data at multiple points throughout the study and the critical reflection by the researcher. The result showed that the actions of applying the text-based approach improve the quality of the English lessons. The improvement happened in the aspects of ; (1) the students’ behaviour covered the students’ attention and the students’ involvement during the English teaching-learning process, (2) the interaction in the classroom, (3) the students’ concentration during the English teaching-learning process, and (4) the students’ participation in the English teaching-learning process.
