Abstract

A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACTS OF HESTER PRYNNE IN ROLAND JOFFE’S THE SCARLET LETTER AS A REFLECTION OF AMERICAN SOCIETY IN 17th CENTURY By: Rayi Denok Sunestri 06211141008 ABSTRACT This research aims at finding out the classifications and functions of speech acts based on the illocutionary acts employed by Hester Prynne in Roland Joffe’s The Scarlet Letter. In addition, this research also aims at identifying the characteristics of American society in 17th century as shown by Hester Prynne’s speech acts in the film. The Scarlet Letter is a film about a brave woman, Hester Prynne, who tries to oppose the dominance of religion in America in 17th century. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, although quantitative was also used to reveal the frequency of each type of speech act. The object of this research was Hester’s speech acts in The Scarlet Letter. The data were in the form of scenes which employ speech acts by considering their context. The data were analyzed based on Searle’s categorization of speech acts. In addition, in analyzing speech acts based on their context, in this research the theory of context by Holmes is used. The researcher was the primary instrument in this research. The secondary instruments were data sheets. The data analysis of this research was based on the illocutionary acts and the context of utterances. The results show that: first, there are four types of speech acts used by Hester Prynne in the film. They are representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. Declaration is not performed by Hester since she is an ordinary woman who does not have an authority, such as a priest or a judge. In The Scarlet Letter, the highest frequency is representatives type since the social condition at that time is not suitable with Hester’s opinion. Therefore, Hester uses her utterances to assert what she believes to be the case. Protesting subtype holds the highest frequency among other types in representatives since she is a brave woman who always opposes the customs and regulations of the society which do not give her good treatment. In addition, commanding holds the highest frequency among all other subtypes. Although it is a directive speech act, this subtype uses the three types of sentence (declarative, interrogative, and imperative). It is shown that Hester also uses other types of sentence in commanding other people to show her politeness, since she is a new comer there. Third, the characteristic of American society in 17th century which can be shown by Hester’s speech acts is the dominance of religion in society, since religion controls all things in the society including controlling how to communicate, how to dress, how to decide one’s punishment, how to control the mourning times, and how religion controls women’s lives in society.
