Abstract

This research was aimed at developing autonomous listening learning materials for TOEFL preparation for learnes at independent laguage learning center at Yoyakarta State University to help the learnes improve their listening skils. This research was a Research and Development study wich refers to development model proposed by Tomlinson(1998) that comprises the steps of needs analysis, design of the syllabus, design of the final draft of materials. The subjects of this reserach were thiry learnes who are members of ILLC Pusat bahasa Yogyakarta State University. data collection instruments were questionnaires and open ended interviews. That data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. This research developed six units of autonomous listening tasks for beginner ad intermediate level: they are:Everyday dialogs inU.S.A, Education, Travel & Tourism, General Daily Activties, and Education. The need of the learnes of ILLC in learning listening is to improve both listening skills and TOEFL score. The neds of the learnes of ILLC in learning listening in reference to the necessities are to improve the learnes' lacks in preparing the TOEFL listening section. The needs of the learnes of ILLC in learning listening in reference to the learig needs are(1) the input in form of printed materials, audio recording.(2) the listening skils the learnes needed are: to find main topic, to find main idea, to find impilied meaning, to make prediction, to determine the meaning of idiomatic expressions, to find details information, to draw conclusion abaout who, where, what, when to find suggestions, and to make inferences. (3) The learnes' role is as active listeners and to answer multiple choice questions;(4)the tutor's role is to give answer key and give explanatios;(5)the length of dialogs/monologs is from 2-4 minuts;(6)improve vocabulary mastery and improve grammar knowledge; (7) the learning activties should include many listening practies and clear instructions; the approriate listening learning materials for the learnes of ILLC in terms of organization are presented of stages of Unit number/title, unit indicator/setting, learning objectives, hints/tips, main activities and reflection part. The result of the research show that the ALLMTP are appropriate. The validation result from materials and audio expert and the tryout show that the product is approriate because the mean of the agreement ranging is from 2.85 to 4.00 on a 4-1 Likert scale.
