Abstract

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH EXTENSIVE READING ACTIVITIES AT GRADE XI IPA 2 OF SMA N 1 PLERET BANTUL IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2011/2012 By Dian Ayuningtyas 06202244102 ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through extensive reading activities at Grade XI IPA 2 of SMA N 1 Pleret, Bantul Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012. This research applied the principles of action research. It was conducted in two cycles of actions. The subjects of the study were 31 students of XI IPA 2 of SMA N 1 Pleret, Bantul in the academic year of 2011/2012. In collecting the data, the researcher used some techniques, namely, observations, interviews, and documentation. The data were in the form of field notes and interview transcripts. The data were qualitative in nature and were analyzed using qualitative technique. To deal with the problems, the researcher implemented extensive reading activities as the main activity consisting of some activities. They were book flood activity, sustained reading activity, quick book report, and telling the truth activity. The result of the research reveals that the implementation of the extensive reading activities using book flood activity, sustained reading activity, and telling the truth activity successfully improved students’ vocabulary mastery. The students could memorize the words easily so that their text understanding improved. In addition, these activities not only made them more enthusiastic but also increased their involvement in the teaching and learning process.
