Abstract

The study was aimed at: (1) assessing student’s perception about the teaching process in the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FLA) in Yogyakarta State University; (2) monitoring and detecting some needs for improving the teaching process in FLA; and (3) providing valuable information for educational system in FLA. Proportional cluster random sampling was used to select 383 students out of 2309 juniors and seniors in FLA. They were 83 from English Language, 80 from Indonesian Language, 25 from French Language, 79 from Javanese Language, 27 from German Language, 38 from Fine Arts Education, 33 from Music Education, and 18 from Dance Education. The data were collected through questionnaire with the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), which was designed by Ramsden in Asutralia. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively with the support of SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The validity of the instrument was examined by using expert judgement, whilst the reliability of the instrument was verified by a mean of coefficient Cronbach’s alpha. The four-scale assessment criteria, including effective, effective enough, less effective, and not effective, was adapted, based on Suharsimi Arikunto. The findings of the study indicate that the teaching staff support is assessed as fairly effective; the generic skills are examined as fairly effective; the student motivation is analyzed as effective; the learning resources are indentified as fairly effective; the appropriate assessment is assessed as not effective; and the appropriate workload is recognized as less effective.
