Abstract

This research is aimed at testing the increase of the elementary fifth-graders’ learning motivation, vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension, and writing skill after the use of “Grow with English 5”. The research was a quasi-experiment by using the Randomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population was the students of grade five of Tarakanita Elementary School of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2010-2011. The sample was established using the Cluster Random Sampling technique. The data were obtained by using: (1) a test to measure the students’ vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension, and writing skill, and (2) a Likert-Scale questionnaire to measure the students’ learning motivation. The data analysis techniques are: (1) descriptive statistics by using the One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test to test the data normality and the Levene Test to test the data homogeneity, and (2) inferential statistics by using the Independent Samples Test. The research results in the following conclusions. (1) There is no significant increase in the students’ learning motivation due to the use of “Grow with English 5”. The hypothesis testing by using motivation gain scores and post motivation scores respectively shows the significance values of .977 and .610. (2) There is no significant increase in the students’ vocabulary mastery due to the use of “Grow with English 5”. The hypothesis testing by using vocabulary gain scores and vocabulary posttest scores respectively shows the significance values of .739 and .260. (3) There is no significant increase in the students’ reading comprehension skill due to the use of “Grow with English 5” with the hypothesis testing by using reading gain scores with the significance value of .150. (4) There is a significant increase in the students’ writing skill due to the use of “Grow with English 5”. The hypothesis testing by using writing gain scores and writing posttest scores respectively shows the significance values of .001and .037.
