Abstract

This study aimed at describing the dynamics of social practice and exploring the process of the reproduction of violence among students. Violence needs to be well understood as a network between the actor and the structure. Through figuring out the core of the problems and the dynamics of violence among students, it can be determined the right and effective strategy to overcome and prevent the recurrence of the violence. This research used interpretive/qualitative approach to find out the meaning and intentionality of the action of the actor. This method required the researcher to do a careful analysis in order to gain detailed qualitative data so that a deep understanding on the subjects. This research was conducted in two high schools in Yogyakarta. The practices of violent of high school students have been linked with student habits on the wider environment. The practices of students’ violence at school area is a representation of violence in the family, peer group, and society. It’s also an expression of cultural capital’s ownership in the form of violent values that are understood and internalized within the students becomes violence habits. Violent students develop distinction as a strategy to distinguish themselves with the other group’s identity. Schools can be considered as a place which reproduces violence, if it fails in breaking down the tensions experienced by students. In the context of power relations, students actually not only relating and negotiating with school authorities or with their parents, but also dealing and negotiating with their fellow students.
