Abstract
This research aims to reveal (1) the correlation between the mastery of cohesive devices and the narrative text writing skill; (2) the correlation between the mastery of text structures and the narrative text writing skill; and (3) the correlation between the mastery of cohesive devices and text structures and the narrative text writing skill of Grade 11 of Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Martapura. The type of this study is ex-post facto. The data were analysed using quantitavie descriptive analysis. The population was 377 of Grade 11 of four SHSs in Martapura. A sample of 182 students was selected using the proportional random sampling technique with a standard error of 5 % from Isaac and Michael formula. The data were collected using a test (objective test) and non-test (essay test). The objective test was used to collect the data on the students’ mastery of cohesive devices and text structures, while the essay test was used to reveal the students’ skills on writing narrative texts. The data were analyzed using the product moment correlation and multiple correlation. The analysis of the requirement test was conducted including data normality and homogeneity tests. The result of the hypothesis testing shows that (1) there is a positive and significant correlation between the mastery of cohesive devices and narrative text writing skill (r1 = 0.362 and SIG = 0.000 < 0.05); (2) there is a positive and significant correlation between the mastery of text structures and narrative text writing skill (r2 = 0.317 and SIG = 0.000 < 0.05); and (3) there is a positive and significant correlation between the mastery of cohesive devices and text structures and the narrative text writing skill (R = 0.456, Fobserved= 29.556 > Ftable = 3.040). It means that the higher the students’ mastery of cohesive devices and text structures is, the higher the scores of their narrative text writing skill are, and vice versa.
