Abstract

The objective of this study is to reveal the English classroom management by English teachers in order to enhance the English language competence of the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sewon Bantul. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative case study. The participants of the study were five English teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Sewon Bantul. The data were obtained through observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The data validity was established through triangulation of sources and methods. The technique of data analysis was the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verifying. The results of this study are as follows. First, the implementation of the English classroom management at SMP Negeri 1 Sewon Bantul had already conducted well although it still needs some improvements in the future. Second, the efforts done by the English teachers and all school members dealing with English classroom management are intended to enhance the students' language competence and to develop their charicter building through the character education. Third, the English classroom management has some obstaoles due to the following reasons: the lack of some facilities in the classrooms to support the classroom management, the external noise that cante from the neighborhood, and the language laboratory with some darnaged computer programs and poor illumination. Eventually, both English teachers and education stakeholders at SMP Negeri 1 Sewon Bantul should consider more efforts and improvements on English classroom management for creating a conducive and representative learning environment for the students.
