Abstract

This study started from students’ writing difficulties in generating ideas and organizing the ideas into an integrated paragraph. It aimed at improving students’ ability in writing recount texts through semantic mapping strategy at SMPN 1 Metro, Lampung. This is an action research study carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of the research were year VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Metro, Lampung. The data gathered were connected with four aspects: (1) the teacher’s teaching strategy, (2) the semantic mapping implementation, and (3) the students’ writing improvement using semantic mapping strategy. The data were gathered qualitatively and quantitatively through questionnaires, observation, interviews, and written tests. The questionnaires were used to see the early writing habits and their response to the implementation of the semantic mapping strategy. The observation was used to see the students’ activeness in learning writing process. The interviews were intended to know their response after the semantic mapping was implemented. The written tests were used to see the early abilities and improvement in writing. The qualitative data were analyzed using interactive qualitative data including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The result of the research shows that the improvement is achieved in every cycle. The students’ ability in generating ideas improved. Another improvement occurs in their ways to organize the ideas. The other writing improvement can be seen from the differences of the pretest result, cycle 1 result, and the cycle 2 result. The mean scores of the pretest is 64,08, the mean score of the first cycle is 80.48, and the mean score in cycle 2 is 88.60.From those results, it can be concluded that semantic mapping strategy can improve the students’ writing ability.
