Abstract

This study aims to know: 1) the different effectiveness among Project Work, Mind Mapping, and Conventional techniques in the teaching of recount text writing, 2) which technique is more effective―Project Work or Mind Mapping― in the teaching of recount text writing, 3) which technique is more effective―Project Work or Conventional―in the teaching of recount text writing, and 4) which technique is more effective―Mind Mapping or Conventional―in the teaching of recount text writing to grade eight students of SMP N 2 Jepara. This study used a quasi-experimental method which applied Pretest- Posttest Control Group design. There were two variables involved, i.e. the techniques used in the teaching of recount text writing as the independent variables and the students’ writing competence as the dependent variable. The research population was the students of grade eight of SMP N 2 Jepara, academic year 2013/ 2014. The data were collected through a non-test technique, which was conducted by giving an assignment to the students to write a recount text. Therefore, the instrument of the research was a writing scoring rubric. The research instrument had the content validity obtained through an expert judgment. An inter-rater technique was used to test the instrument reliability. The data were analysed using One-way Anova followed by Scheffe test. The results of the study show that: 1) Project Work, Mind Mapping, and Conventional techniques are significantly different in effectiveness in teaching recount text writing, indicated by (p) < 0.05, 2) Project Work and Mind Mapping techniques have the same level of effectiveness in the teaching of recount text writing with (p) > 0.05, 3) Project Work is more effective than Conventional techniques in the teaching of recount text writing, although the difference of mean effectiveness between them is low, indicated by (p) > 0.05 and 4) Mind Mapping is more effective than Conventional technique to apply in the teaching of recount text writing to grade eight of SMP N 2 Jepara, indicated by (p) < 0.05.
