Abstract

The aims of the study are: to identify the target needs of the students of Junior High School grade VIII in Yogyakarta; to identify the learning needs of the students of Junior High School grade VIII in Yogyakarta; and to develop the appropriate of scientific approach-based learning materials for English subject in Junior High School grade VIII in Yogyakarta. This is a research and development (R&D) study according to Borg & Gall (1983). The needs analysis process was conducted at SMP N 8 Yogyakarta, SMP N 6 Yogyakarta, and SMP N 14 Yogyakarta. The final product was tried out to 62 students in SMP N 8 Yogyakarta. The instruments in this research were questionnaire, observation sheets, and interview guidelines, the needs analysis questionnaire was used to get information about the students’ needs and the try-out questionnaire was used to obtain information about the students’ agreement towards the learning materials. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and statistically. Based on the result of needs analysis, the text types are descriptive, recount, and narrative text. The learning needs consist of learning input, activities, student role, teacher role, and setting. In this case, new topics related to the students’ daily life, combination of real photos and illustration, and various activities were developed in the learning materials.The learning materials consist of 3 chapters: ‘My Gadgets’, ‘Biography’, and ‘Indonesian Fables’. Each chapter consists of warming up part, listening-speaking, reading-writing, observing, questioning, collecting, associating, communicating, and creating step, homework, summary, reflection, and quote of the day. The result of the questionnaire indicated that the learning materials were in good category with the conversion of 2.52 ≤
