Abstract
The objectives of this research is to know the students’ response to the use of the journal writing and to improve the writing skill of the students of MA Mafatihul Huda Depok, Cirebon through journal writing. This research was classroom action research. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade science students of MA Mafatihul Huda Depok, Cirebon in the academic year of 2014/2015 totalling 29 students. This research was conducted in three cycles consisting of four stages in each cycle. The stages are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data obtained were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained from observation, interviews and field notes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained from writing tests conducted before the implementation of action and in the end of each cycle after the implementation. The results of the research show that the use of the journal writing is succeeded in promoting the students’ positive response toward the learning process. It shows that the presence of the journal writing as the interesting technique increased the students’ attention and seriousness in doing tasks. The journal writing also enhanced the students’ participation and interaction during the leaning activities. The data also shows that the efficacy of the use of the journal writing aided the leaning technique to improve the students’ writing skill. It can be seen from the results of the test after the action in each cycle. In the pretest the mean score of the students was 60.15 or 58% of the maximum score. There was some improvement after the action. In the posttest in the first cycle the students’ mean score was 70.71 or 70.71% of the maximum score. Then in the second cycle the mean score of students was 76.28 or 79% of the maximum score. In the third cycle the mean score of the students was 76.86 or 79.61% of the maximum score. The improvement of the students’ mean score from the pretest to the posttest in the third cycle was 16.71 (76.86-60.15) or 21.61% (79.61%-58%). So, the students responded the use of the journal writing positively, and the use of the journal writing could improve the students’ writing skill.
