Abstract

The objectives of this research was to develop the appropriate reading and writing learning materials for grade eight students of SMP Negeri 4 Magelang. The nature of this research was Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this study were 32 students of grade eight at SMP Negeri 4 Magelang. The steps of this research were conducting the needs analysis, designing the syllabus, developing the first draft of the materials, expert judgment, writing the final draft of the materials. The instruments to collect the data were needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaire. The data that were collected in this research were quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitaive data were analyzed through descriptive statistics while the qualitative data were analyzed qualitatively. This study developed three units of materials. The materials were developed based on Curriculum 2013. The units have three main parts: Introduction, Lesson Proper, and Reinforcement. Based on the findings from the expert judgment, the materials are categorized appropriate. The main score of all aspects of the three developed units is 3.17 which can be categorized as “Very Good”.
