Abstract

Grade eight students are expected to be able read several text types, i.e. descriptive, recount, report, and narrative, and some short functional texts. The preliminary study showed that most of class 8D students of MTsN Yogyakarta II in the academic year of 2014/2015 had lower reading comprehension ability on recount texts than that they should do. Therefore, the aim of this research is to improve the reading comprehension ability of grade eight students of MTsN Yogyakarta II through Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in the academic year 2014/2015. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) study and the procedure was adapted from the one by Elliot (1991). The steps of TBLT were adapted from Willis and Willis (2007) and they were developed in three phases, i.e.: Pre-Task, Task Cycle, and Post-Task. Some activities to help students to recall or learn useful words and phrases were given in the pre-task phase. In the task-cycle, the students then did a reading session and prepared to report to the class before they presented or displayed their written reports. In the post-task phase, a grammar review was given to give a chance for the students to practice words and patterns or other language features occurring in the task text. Finally, the students wrote a text to strengthen their reading comprehension ability. The actions were conducted in two cycles and there were five meetings each. Observation and interviews were used to collect data which were then analyzed qualitatively. Students’ achievement in daily-test that was considered as the pre-test, the students’ self reflection in the form of rating format and the students’ achievement of post-tests were used in order to support the data collected. The data collected were then analyzed to sum up the result. The results of this study indicate that TBLT can improve not only the teaching learning process but also the students’ reading comprehension ability in recount text. It is shown that the students are interested to learn reading and they enjoy the reading teaching learning process using TBLT. The students’ average score in pre-test is 62.81. In the first cycle the mean score is 72.03, meanwhile the mean score in the second cycle is 79.06. It means that there is an improvement of students’ scores from cycle to cycle. From this result, it is concluded that teaching reading using TBLT for grade eight students at MTsN Yogyakarta II can improve the students’ reading comprehension ability.
